MIT Department
of Urban Studies and Planning
Role: Poster Design, Branding, Logo design
Featured in: Solo exhibition, Intersections, at MIT’s Rotch Library, Archinect.com
These posters present an eclectic graphic identity that reflects the broad scope of MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning’s work. Drawing inspiration from good city design, which adapts to the needs of its residents rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, each poster was uniquely created for each event it advertises. The variation in design is also inspired by the vast array of studies existing at DUSP, which makes room for many schools of thought about urban planning and supports projects spearheaded by individuals throughout the department.
I revised the DUSP logo. See the old logo on the left and the new one on the right.
See the posters I designed for DUSP’s lecture series.
For this lecture on temporary placemaking, I made a poster that illustrated the idea of temporary by using brightly visible tape to hang the posters, an an additional poster taped to the front. The feedback on this was really interesting: People worried that people would steal the front poster. Turns out that if someone is going to steal a poster, they’re going to steal the whole thing, not just one portion of it. We were fine.
The City Design and Development Group (CDD)
I created a logo for The City Design and Development Group. The branding is inspired by maps of city blocks. Each poster contains lines at 40 and 50 degree angles.
These two posters were for a series on designing practice. I enhanced the idea of design by tracing some of the architects’ work and imposing it over a photo. They each contain a line at a 40% angle and 50% angle, which characterize them as part of the City Design and Development Group.
The Environmental Planning and Policy Group
I created this poster series for The Environmental Planning and Policy Group in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The series included a lecture on light pollution, so I whitened out a bit of some of the posters.
